Clinton LumberKings News Release
Appleton, WI - Two-out hits by Dennis Raben and Kalian Sams and a five-inning performance from left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney helped the Clinton LumberKings win the series with a 4-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday night.
Raben ripped a two-out RBI triple off the center-field batter's eye in the top of the first, scoring Vinnie Catricala for a 1-0 lead. Gillheeney would make that run stand up over his first four innings, but the Rattlers finally broke through on a two-run homer over the short wall in left by Franklin Romero.
Trailing 2-1, Clinton tied the score with help from four Wisconsin errors in the sixth. Sams reached first and went to second on two errors, then scored on a well-placed single by James Jones that escaped shortstop Michael Marseco. Jones would steal second and race home for the deciding run on a grounder from Steven Baron.
Sams added insurance in the seventh, plating Catricala with a two-out double to right-center.
Gillheeney (W, 1-0) exited with two runs on four hits over 5.0 innings and the LumberKings bullpen took over. Lefty Brian Moran (H, 1) was stingy, giving up just a hit while striking out five over 3.0 innings. Right-hander Brandon Josselyn (S,1) then struck out all three men he faced for the save in the ninth.
Wisconsin starter Maverick Lasker allowed only a run over 5.0 innings, but Milwaukee Brewers' first-round pick Kyle Heckathorn (L, 0-1) relinquished the lead with three runs, two earned over 2.0 innings.
Catricala led all hitters, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. The big night extended his hitting streak to six games. Sams also continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 with the double and his team-leading eighth RBI.
D'Vontray Richardson went 2-for-4 atop the order for the Timber Rattlers.
The LumberKings (4-2) return home to take on the Quad Cities River Bandits tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Left-hander Anthony Vasquez (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN or www.lumberkings.com.
