Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - In opener of a three-game series with the Lake County Captains during the final leg of a nine-game homestand overall, the Bowling Green Hot Rods were essentially eliminated from playoff contention in the Midwest League first half with a 7-2 loss on Monday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Coming into the game hitting .290 as a team in their last 10 games, the Captains started off hot against Hot Rods starter Roel Ramirez (L, 2-5). In the first inning, Lake County used back-to-back homers from catcher Francisco Mejia and outfielder Connor Marabell to go up 2-0. One inning later, the Captains got a two-out, two-run triple by shortstop Willi Castro to take a 5-0 lead.

Despite earning the loss, Ramirez finished off the game with four scoreless innings, striking out the side in the sixth inning. Lake County got their final two runs in the sixth and the eighth inning respectively on a run-scoring groundout and a sacrifice fly from outfielder Nathan Lukes against Armando Bastardo.

Offensively, the Hot Rods were stifled by Captains starter Sam Hentges, who gave up just two hits and struck out eight batters in five scoreless innings to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Bowling Green scored their two runs against Lake County reliever Brock Hartson as third basemen Kevin Padlo ripped a RBI double in the sixth inning and outfielder Joe McCarthy duplicated that with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning.

McCarthy and catcher David Rodriguez led Bowling Green with two hits apiece.

With the loss, the Hot Rods elimination number for playoff contention for the first half of the Midwest League season is officially at one. However, with rainouts, the Captains can finish no worse than 38-32 while South Bend can finish no worse than 38-31. With six games left, the Hot Rods can finish at 37-32 at best.

Bowling Green will try to right the ship with the second game of a three-game series against the Lake County Captains on Tuesday. Hot Rods will send LHP Genesis Cabrera to the mound while the Captains will counter with RHP Matt Esparza.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
