Offense Lights up the Scoreboard

June 14, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

LANSING, Mich. - The Loons scored 11 runs on 14 hits, including two four-run innings, and buoyed Midwest League All-Star Dennis Santana to his first win of the season with an 11-4 triumph over the Lansing Lugnuts on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The right-hander is now 1-8 on the season while the Loons (27-37) snap a three-game losing streak. Five batters recorded multiple hits in the ballgame and every batter reached for Great Lakes. Right-hander Jake Henson socked his third home run of the season with a blast to left-center field in the 5th inning to put the Loons on top 7-3.

Fellow righty Cristian Gomez enjoyed a career night with five RBI, two doubles and three total hits, all to left field. It's the second three-hit game of Gomez' career and the fourth-year pro also set a career high with five RBI, one more than his four-RBI performance with the Arizona League Dodgers on August 26, 2014.

The Loons rallied from a 3-0 hole after a rocky 2nd inning. Santana walked the leadoff batter and lefty John La Prise reached on an error with no outs. After right-hander Josh Almonte doubled in a run to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead, a wild pitch scored two runners as Almonte scored from second with a head-first slide.

Santana steadied and retired 13 of his final 15 batters in a quality start. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic lasted six innings for his third start in a row.

In the 4th inning for the Loons Gomez snagged his first double of the game driving home two runs and Garrett Hope singled home a run as well to tie the game at that point. Then in the 5th inning after and RBI-single by Eric Meza, Henson extended the Loons lead to four.

The second four-run inning of the night for Great Lakes came in the 7th and was punctuated with Gomez's second double of the night, this time plating a full diamond of Loons.

Lansing designated hitter Connor Panas responded in the bottom of the 7th inning with his second homerun in as many games but it surely was not enough.

Lugnuts lefty starter Angel Perdomo (L, 2-2) came into the night with the fourth lowest ERA in the Midwest League and the lowest opponent batting average in all of the minors but was undone by the Loons offense and was chased after 4 1/3 innings conceding six earned runs on seven hits and 3 walks.

Great Lakes got a much needed three inning performance out of reliever Adam Bray (SV, 2) who only allowed one run on two hits collecting four strikeouts along the way.

The five-game series rolls along with another doubleheader on Wednesday night with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:35 p.m. ET. Coverage of Loons baseball for all of the night's action starts at 5:05.

The Great Lakes Loons have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007 and are in their 10th season in 2016. For tickets and more information about the Loons, call 989-837-BALL or visit Loons.com.
