Loons Halt Lugnuts, 11-4
June 14, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - For the third time in 2016, the Lansing Lugnuts put together a four-game winning streak. And for the third time in 2016, the winning streak ended at four games.
Cristian Gomez slugged a two-run double and a three-run double, and the Great Lakes Loons (27-37) handed the Lugnuts (33-31) an 11-4 defeat on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Lansing grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning, and all seemed well with All-Star left-hander Angel Perdomo cruising through three innings with five strikeouts.
But Gomez's two-run double capped a game-tying three-run fourth-inning rally, and Jake Henson knocked a three-run homer in a four-run fifth, giving the Loons a sudden 7-3 lead.
Perdomo entered the game with a Minor League-leading .150 opposition batting average, but allowed seven hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out seven.
Great Lakes put the game away against relievers Nate Abel and Josh DeGraaf with a four-run seventh inning, climaxed by Gomez's bases-clearing double off DeGraaf.
After their early offense, Lansing's only subsequent highlight arrived in the bottom of the seventh inning - designated hitter Connor Panas's fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to deepest left-center. It was Panas's second straight game with a home run.
Despite allowing Panas's home run, Loons reliever Adam Bray pitched the final three innings to record his second save of the year.
Wednesday will see the two clubs play their second doubleheader in three days. The Lugnuts are scheduled to start right-hander Patrick Murphy (0-0, 3.18) and left-hander Ryan Borucki (2-3, 4.13), opposed by Loons right-hander Isaac Anderson (4-2, 4.34) and a pitcher yet to be announced. It's a Winning Wednesday at Cooley Law School Stadium - if the Lugnuts win either of the two games, fans in attendance will receive tickets to a future Nuts game this season!
