Clutch Hitting Puts Cubs over Dragons 6-1

DAYTON, OH - Eddy Martinez and Josh Silver delivered two-out clutch hits in the fifth inning leading to a 6-1 South Bend Cubs win over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field in Ohio.

Martinez, who collected his first professional four hit game, came through with the scored tied at one in the fifth with a single to center field scoring Eloy Jimenez to put the Cubs ahead 2-1. The lead was 3-1 after 26-year old newcomer Josh Silver followed by delivering his first Midwest League hit and RBI with a single scoring Martinez.

The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Carlos Sepulveda walked and crossed home plate when Ian Rice hit into a double play.

South Bend added a run in the sixth on Ian Rice's sixth home run of the year. The home run, the Cubs first long ball in eight games, pushed the South Bend lead to 4-1.

The lead advanced to 5-1 thanks to a P.J. Higgins single with two outs in the seventh inning who later scored on a wild pitch.

South Bend starter Kyle Miller (1-1) had a terrific second start with the Cubs as he gave up only four hits and one unearned run over a professional career high six innings.

Kyle Twomey earned the save as recording the final nine outs allowing no runs on three hits.

The Cubs remain in first place in the Eastern Division entering play Tuesday.

South Bend will start Adbert Alzolay (4-3, 4.36) at Dayton tonight at 7:00pm(ET) on 96.1fm WSBT.
