Pitcher's Duel Ends in Snappers Loss

BELOIT, Wisc.- Kane County and Beloit hooked up in a pitchers' duel as the Cougars got a couple late runs off the Snappers bullpen to walk away with a 2-1 victory on Monday evening at Pohlman Field.

Snappers' starter Michael Murray got out of an early jam in the top of the first. With runners on first and third, Murray retired Grant Heyman on a groundout to escape the jam.

The Snappers had a scoring chance in the bottom of the second. Ryan Howell worked a base on balls and Miguel Guzman ripped a single to start the inning. Jean Carlo Rodriguez struck out swinging and Edwin Diaz grounded into a double play.

Kane County generated a scoring threat in the top of the fourth. Trevor Mitsui worked a walk and Grant Heyman laced a base hit to open the inning. Murray wiggled out of the jam as he retired Galli Cribbs on a flyout and induced a double play off the bat of Jason Morozowski.

The Snappers finally delivered a big hit in the bottom of the seventh to take a 1-0 lead. Pinch hitter Brett Siddall drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a costly wild pitch. Moments later, Trace Loehr hammered an opposite field RBI single to put the Snappers up 1-0.

The lead would be short lived as Kane County answered with two runs in the top of the eighth. Fernery Ozuna connected on a one-out single. Two batters later, Austin Byler worked a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs. Designated hitter Mitsui then clubbed a two-run double to the gap in right center to put the Cougars up 2-1.

Beloit would strand two runners in the bottom of the eighth. The Snappers had a golden scoring chance in the bottom of the ninth. After fouling off several pitches, Michael Soto found the hole on the right side of the infield for a base hit to lead off the inning. Siddall followed with a ringing single into center field. Michael Martin then failed to get a sacrifice bunt down, and hit into a costly double play. Loehr lined out to second to end the contest. The Snappers left eight men on base throughout the game.

Jesus Zambrano took the loss in relief going one inning, giving up two hits, one walk, and two earned runs while striking out two Cougars. Murray pitched seven dominant innings giving up five hits, two walks, and no runs while striking out five batters.

Loehr led the Snappers' offensive attack going 3-for-4 and one RBI. As a team, Beloit pounded out eight hits.

The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and are a fourth year Class-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.
