Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Burlington Bees picked up a 3-2 eight-inning win Tuesday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a game that was shortened due to rain at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Burlington (32-33) clinched an early series victory in this three-game set over Cedar Rapids (33-31), which suffered its sixth consecutive loss overall.

In the top of the first inning, back-to-back two-out singles put the Bees in front. Brendon Sanger and Jared Walsh had extended the frame after a walk and a single, respectively. Jordan Serena and Alexi Rivera followed with RBI singles that scored Sanger and Walsh for a quick 2-0 Burlington lead.

The Kernels answered in the bottom of the first by tying the game, 2-2. Luis Arraez and Daniel Kihle both singled to open the inning and were both in scoring position following a check-swing groundout by Zander Wiel. Two batters later, Nelson Molina hit a two-out RBI single that brought in both runners.

Jared Foster delivered the decisive run for the Bees during the second inning. Michael Pierson recorded a leadoff double and advanced to third base when Webster Rivas grounded out. Foster came through with an RBI double to drive in Pierson and lift Burlington to a 3-2 lead.

Neither team was able to scratch the scoreboard over the next several innings of Tuesday's game, which entered a rain delay in the top of the eighth. The game was officially called due to rain at the end of a 52-minute delay.

Bees right-hander Jaime Barria (6-4) claimed the win after allowing just two runs in five innings pitched. Burlington southpaw Tyler Watson earned his first career save in the rain-shortened tilt, tossing two shutout frames of relief. Kernels right-hander Fernando Romero (4-1) took his first loss this season, giving up three runs over five frames. It was also Romero's first defeat since August 20, 2012 for the Dominican Summer League Twins.

The series finale between the Kernels and the Bees will be at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Cedar Rapids right-hander Miles Nordgren (2-3, 3.26 ERA) is scheduled to face Burlington right-hander Jared Ruxer (3-1, 1.28 ERA).
