Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
The Hot Rods look to extend a season-high four-game win streak as RHP Shane Baz (2017 first-round pick, acquired in the Chris Archer trade last season) takes the mound for his fourth start of the season. There will be a fireworks display following tonight's game.
Note: Tomorrow's game will be a 12:05 PM CDT first pitch in the series finale between these two teams.
About Yesterday... The Hot Rods extended their winning streak to four games with a second-consecutive victory over the Dayton Dragons. The Hot Rods struck first in the bottom of the first, as Chris Betts launched a two-run homer. After Dayton tied the game in the second, Bowling Green re-took the lead on an RBI by Michael Smith in the bottom of the frame, only for Dayton to once again tie the game in the third. From there, though, the Hot Rods took control, scoring four times in the fourth, with Ford Proctor providing a key two-run single to gain separation. After Dayton scored a fourth run off Easton McGee in the fifth, the BG bullpen held the Dragons scoreless the rest of the way. The Hot Rods would pad the lead in the later innings as Grant Witherspoon homered in the seventh and Seaver Whalen capped off a successful Hot Rods debut with an RBI single in the eighth, putting the final touches on a 10-4 victory and a season-high four-game winning streak.
Offensive Awakening... After averaging just 2.79 runs per game over the first two weeks (14 games) of May, the Bowling Green offense has experienced a resurgence of late, beginning with the historic 17-0 win over South Bend on May 15. After batting .237 as a team in the first 38 games of the season, the Hot Rods have hit .322 over the past 11 contests, averaging 12.27 hits and 7.27 runs per game in that span. Not coincidentally, after starting the month 7-7, the Hot Rods have gone 8-3, improving their overall record to a season-best nine game above .500. On the year, the Hot Rods now boast league-leading totals in batting average (.259) and hits (456), while scoring the second-most runs (238), behind only East Division-leading Great Lakes. In addition, Saturday night marked the league-high sixth time that Bowling Green has scored ten or more runs in a game.
Home Sweet Home... The Hot Rods have continued to bolster their impressive numbers at Bowling Green Ballpark this season. Having won three straight at home, Bowling Green now sits at 15-8 at home, which is tied for the fourth-best record in the league. Both sides of the ball have been more effective at home, with the pitching staff posting a 2.70 ERA at home (second-best in the league), compared to a 4.02 mark on the road. The offense has enjoyed similar success at home, posting a .281 average (also second-best) and averaging 5.17 runs per game, compared to marks of .240 and 4.58 runs/game away from Bowling Green.
Wizard of Osmy... After an extended slump to begin the season, Osmy Gregorio, similar to Tony Pena, has seen his offensive production increase tremendously over the second half of May. After enduring a 1-for-40 stretch spanning the end of April and beginning of May, his batting average bottomed out at .120 on May 14. However, Gregorio has quickly turned the corner, raising his average to the cusp of the Mendoza Line, .199, just nine games later. In that span, Osmy has gone 16-for-38 (.421) with a trio of three-hit games, his first three of the season. He currently carries a season-high six-game hitting streak as well.
