Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs gave up eight runs in the first two innings and fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 11-1 in their first Sunday road game of 2019. The loss drops the Chiefs to 21-28 on the season with a Memorial Day 12:05 p.m. game set to finish the road trip.
The Kernels got on the board n the bottom of the first inning against fill-in starter Mike Brettell. Yeltsin Encarnacion reached on a comebacker and went to second on a throwing error by Brettell before scoring on an infield single by Ben Rodriguez.
Another error plated the Kernels second run in the second inning and Encarnaction launched a three-run homer for a 5-0 Kernels lead. Cedar Rapids loaded the bases with one out and ended Brettell's day when Jacob Pearson doubled home three runs for an 8-0 advantage.
Pearson singled home another run in the fourth against Thomas St. Clair for a 9-0 lead. The Chiefs third error of the game helped the Kernels score two runs against Cole Aker in the fifth inning for an 11-0 lead.
The Chiefs finally got on the board to avoid the shutout in the sixth inning. Brendan Donovan doubled to the wall in left-center with one out and scored on a single to center by Nolan Gorman with two down.
Cedar Rapids collected their 12th run on a double, single, error and two walks in the seventh inning.
Brettell (1-1) took the loss as he allowed eight runs, six earned, on eight hits over 1 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out two. St. Clair allowed one run on four hits and one walk over 2 1/3 innings as he struck out one. The Chiefs continue their series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday at 12:05 p.m. Peoria will start LH Diego Cordero (2-3, 2.61) against Cedar Rapids RH Luis Rijo (1-4, 3.47).
