Clinton LumberKings News Release
CLINTON, IA - Chris Vallimont turned in another strong start for the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon - helping to defeat the Burlington Bees 3-2 at LumberKings Stadium. Clinton (26-23) rallied for two-runs in the seventh to beat the Bees (28-22) for the second straight time.
Vallimont started for the LumberKings and threw six innings but was given a no decision for his time out. He allowed just one run, unearned, on one hit while walking one and striking out nine.
Vallimont did not allow a base runner to reach against him until the fifth inning when the Bees pushed across the game's first run. Spencer Griffin reached on an error by third basemen Marcos Rivera to open the inning and came around to score on an RBI single by Connor Fitzsimmons.
Clinton immediately answered the run with their first tally of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Burlington starter Jose Soriano opened the frame by setting down the first two batters but then issued his first walk of the game to Davis Bradshaw. On the very next pitch, Rivera doubled off the wall in center field to tie the score at one.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Soriano (3-5) walked two batters in the frame to end his outing after working 6.1 innings. Thomas Jones singled home a run to put Clinton on top for good and another run was added on a Rivera ground ball to short that was played into an error.
Soriano was given the loss for his time out. He allowed all three of the LumberKings runs on three hits while walking three and striking out 10.
Nathan Alexander came on in relief for Clinton starting in the seventh inning and earned the win for two innings of shutout work. He allowed just one hit, walked none, and struck out three.
The Bees pulled to within one run in the top of the ninth against Clinton reliever Elkin Alcala. Spencer Griffin tripled to open the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to left. Alcala then retired the next two batters on fly outs to record his first save of the season.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the fourth and final game of their four-game series on Monday afternoon. Clinton will throw right-handed pitcher Alberto Guerrero (2-0, 2.52). Burlington will tap righty Robinson Pina (3-2, 2.79).
