Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored eight runs within the first hour of play Sunday afternoon and cruised to a 14-1 victory versus the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,197 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels (25-25) reached the .500 mark for the second time this season while taking a 2-1 series lead.

Ben Rodriguez opened the scoring with a first-inning RBI single before a season-high seven-run outburst in the second inning pushed Cedar Rapids to an 8-0 advantage. Gabe Snyder's run-scoring single brought in Andrew Bechtold. Yeltsin Encarnacion added a three-run home run, and Jacob Pearson cleared the bases with a three-run double.

The Kernels also scored during the fourth and fifth innings to secure an 11-0 lead. Jared Akins tripled in the fourth and came home on Pearson's RBI single. Gilberto Celestino produced an RBI triple within the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Akins.

Peoria (21-28) broke up the shutout on Nolan Gorman's RBI single in the sixth, but Cedar Rapids got that run back during the seventh. Michael Davis started the inning with a leadoff double. Celestino hit a one-out single to drive Davis to third base, and an error on the play allowed Davis to score for a 12-1 lead.

Two final Kernels runs within the eighth inning put the advantage at 14-1. Back-to-back singles from Gabriel Maciel and Snyder opened the frame. Maciel scored from third base during a groundout by Davis. Later in the inning, Celestino grounded into an error with Snyder coming home.

Cedar Rapids set new season highs with their 14 runs and 18 hits during Sunday's win. All nine Kernels batters posted at least one hit featuring three-hit performances by Celestino, Encarnacion, and Snyder. Pearson tied a career high with four runs batted in.

Josh Winder (3-1) recorded a quality start and picked up the victory. Winder notched seven strikeouts over seven innings while allowing just one run.

Michael Brettell (1-1) gave up a personal-high eight hits and eight runs in a losing decision. He recorded just four outs during a short start.
