Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

About Last Night... The Hot Rods bounced back from a shutout loss on Friday night by blasting three home runs in a 5-3 victory against the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday. In a back-and-forth affair, Kaleo Johnson launched a solo homer in the second, but Lansing took the lead with runs in the third and fourth. After the Hot Rods left the bases loaded in back-to-back innings, Connor Hollis tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth. Lansing regained the lead in the seventh, but Grant Witherspoon re-tied the game with a sacrifice fly, then Hollis lofted a two-run shot into the Hot Rod bullpen, giving Bowling Green a 5-3 lead that they would not relinquish. On the mound, Alan Strong worked 6.0 innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven.

Digging the Longball... Bowling Green rocked three homers last night, the fifth time this season that the Hot Rods have hit a trio of home runs. The Hot Rods now have 21 homers on the season through 23 games, which ranks second in the Midwest League, one homer behind Peoria. The Hot Rods are on pace for 128 homers this year, which would far surpass the current franchise record of 106 homers set by the 2011 team. Individually, Kaleo Johnson and Chris Betts are both tied for sixth in the league with four homers apiece, while Wander Franco and Connor Hollis both have gone deep three times.

Strong Man... Alan Strong's first start in 11 days was a successful one. Despite wobbling in the third and fourth inning, Strong settled down and recorded his second quality start of the season, allowing two runs in 6.0 innings. Hot Rods hurlers have now tossed six quality starts this season, including three in the last four games. Thanks in part to the recent run of quality starts, Hot Rods starters have thrown 110.1 innings this season, which is the most by a Midwest League rotation thus far.

What a Relief... Trey Cumbie successfully worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded the tying run in the ninth to nail down his second save of the season in last night's game. Though the Hot Rods' relief corps have a 4.18 ERA which ranks 12th in the league, they have been adept at holding lead, with Cumbie's save giving the Hot Rods six saves in seven chances, which is fourth-best in the circuit.

Welcome Back... The Hot Rods today welcome back outfielder Michael Smith, who was activated from the injured list this morning. Smith left the April 16th contest against Lake County after crashing into the center field wall and was placed on the injured list the next day. At the time of the injury, Smith was batting .355 with a league-best .524 on-base-percentage. The move returns the Hot Rods to 25 active players.

Blow Out the Candles... Today marks the 22nd birthday for pitcher Shane McClanahan. The southpaw was born on this date in 1997 in Baltimore, Maryland. He shares a birthday with Oakland Athletics infielder Matt Chapman, Los Angeles Dodgers infielder David Freese, and Cincinnati Reds Hall-of-Famer Barry Larkin.

Yesterday's Notes... Ford Proctor extended his hitting streak to eight games...Connor Hollis hit two homers, the first multi-home run game of his career and the fourth by a Hot Rod this season...All four instances have occurred in the past nine games (spanning ten days)...Hollis collected his fifth multi-hit game (second consecutive) of the season and his second multi-RBI game of the year...Hollis' three RBI are a season night for him...
