Clinton LumberKings News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - In the first doubleheader of the 2019 season the Clinton LumberKings walked away with a split - falling in game one 1-6 and taking game two 3-1. The LumberKings (12-10) win in game two was their first over the River Bandits (12-10) in Quad Cities since 2017.
GAME ONE
A five-run River Bandits fifth inning was the difference in a 6-1 LumberKings loss in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits trailed for much of the contest until sending nine men to the plate in fifth for an offensive breakout.
The LumberKings opened the scoring in the top of the first. Connor Scott was hit by a pitch from Quad Cities starter Luis Garcia and scored three batters later on a Sean Reynolds RBI double to right center field.
Garcia (1-0) allowed no more during his time out and earned is first win of the season. Over five innings of work he allowed one run on just two hits while walking none and striking out seven.
Clinton starter Chris Vallimont was sharp through the first four innings but couldnot get through the fifth. He allowed an unearned run in the fourth that tied the game and all five of the River Bandits runs in the fifth.
Quad Cities first four batters of the inning reached with hits starting a rally that would bring nine River Bandits up to the plate in the inning.
GAME TWO
As was the case in game one, game two was decided by a big rally. The LumberKings broke out for three runs in the fourth inning against Quad Cities starter Brett Daniel and then held on for a 3-1 win.
J.D. Osborne started the game's scoring with an RBI single to center that broke a scoreless tie. Two batters later Thomas Jones doubled into the left field corner to provide what proved to be the difference for the LumberKings.
Daniels (0-2) was given the loss for his four innings of work. He allowed three runs on five hits while walking none and striking out five.
Clinton starter Alberto Guerrero needed little support with a start that he dominated at times. He struck out the side in order in the second and ended his assignment with eight strikeouts while walking three and allowing just two hits.
Guerrero (2-0) allowed just one run over his five innings of work. In the bottom of the fifth, Austin Dennis turned a one-out single into an unearned run that would turn out to be the only run allowed by Clinton pitching in game two.
Humberto Mejia came on in relief and worked the final two innings to earn his first save of the year.
The LumberKings will take tomorrow off before welcoming in the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday night. Clinton will throw right-handed pitcher Humberto Mejia (0-0, 0.79) while the Whitecaps will go with right hander Gio Arriera (1-1, 4.63).
