Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Columbia, South Carolina - Tuesday, January 30) The Charlotte Checkers didn't play their best but still prevailed in a shootout 3-2 Tuesday night against the Columbia Inferno at the Carolina Coliseum. Checkers goalie Chris Holt was clearly the difference-maker in the victory with 41 saves in regulation, stops on two penalty shots, and saves on three of five Columbia shootout attempts.

The Checkers were forced into overtime and the shootout after squandering a two-goal, third period lead. After a scoreless five-minute, sudden-death overtime session, the Checkers stormed out to a 3-1 advantage in the shootout. Charlotte's first three attempts in the shootout by Hugh Jessiman, Dan Murphy and Mark Lee all were successful against Columbia goalie Todd Ford. The Checkers eventually prevailed in the shootout, by outscoring the Inferno three goals to two to secure the two-point win.

Charlotte (23-15-3 for 49 points) now leads 4-0-0 in the nine-game season series against the Inferno. The win was the Checkers sixth overall in their last seven games, and improved their record to 6-1-2 in their last nine games.

"Chris Holt was absolutely fantastic tonight," remarked Charlotte Coach Derek Wilkinson. "That was probably the best game I have ever seen him play. That said, I was very disappointed in our overall play as a team tonight. We had four or five guys who didn't show up at all. We really didn't deserve to get two points tonight. I'll be addressing these issues with the players tomorrow."

The Checkers took a 1-0 first-period advantage on Jessiman's goal with four minutes left in the stanza. After a scoreless second period, the Checkers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the third on Corey Potter's shot from outside the blueline that was misplayed by Ford.

Columbia (15-21-3-4 for 37 points) fought back to cut the Checkers lead to one goal on Brad Ralph's tally with ten minutes remaining in the final period. Trailing 2-1 late in regulation, Inferno Coach Troy Mann pulled Ford for a sixth attacker. With just seven seconds left in the third period, Columbia's Owen Fussey scored on a goal-mouth scramble to tie the game at 2-2. The Checkers eventual win in the shootout extended the Inferno's winless streak to five games at 0-2-3.

The Checkers next game is Friday, February 2 when they'll host the Florida Everblades at Charlotte Bobcats Arena at 7:30 p.m. The first 2,000 fans entering the arena on February 2 will receive a free Checkers T-Shirt compliments of Corporate Xposure.

CHECKERS TUESDAY NIGHT SCRATCHES: Dusty Jamieson, John Donnelly, Rick Kozak, Nathan Gillies and Adam Nightingale.
