ECHL Idaho Steelheads

Two-and-a-half out of three ain't bad

January 30, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Steelheads took to the road last week, won two games and lost a third in overtime, resulting in five of a possible six points. The return of goaltender Steve Silverthorn who notched his third shutout of the season over Utah Wednesday, combined with Lance Galbraith's hat trick against Las Vegas Saturday saw an all around team effort from a club that has had good success on the road this season (Road 13-8-1/Home 9-8-2).

Head Coach Derek Laxdal said of his team's effort, "The guys played very hard in two tough buildings. I'm satisfied with five points, but thought we could have won all three games." He added, "It's good to see the guys competing to win every game they play, especially going into this series against one of the hottest clubs in the league (Victoria has won their last four games). The tougher the teams we play and the more solid the competition, the better hockey team we are down the road."

Next, the Steelheads spawn a five-game marathon against the division-rival Salmon Kings with two this weekend in Victoria, followed by a three-game series at Qwest Arena next week. Idaho has a 2-1-0 record against Victoria this season.

Back in "The Show"

Former Steelhead Zenon Konopka was recently traded from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a six-player deal. Konopka, at that point had not appeared in an NHL game this season, but had scored four goals and seven points in 23 games with the Ducks last season. The 26-year-old had 11 tallies and 24 assists in 42 contests this season with Portland of the American Hockey League. Konopka since has been called up to the Blue Jackets and played in one game on January 27th, scoring no points and picking up two penalty minutes. Konopka had been selected to represent Portland in the AHL All-Star Game, but missed it because of his NHL call up. "Zenon Konopka and Curtis Glencross (included in the six-player trade) are two young guys who have a chance to develop into solid NHL players," Blue Jackets president and general manager Doug MacLean said. "Konopka, in particular, is a hard-working character player who we think has a real good upside." Konopka helped the Steelheads capture the 2004 Kelly Cup in its inaugural ECHL season, tallying 17 points (9g-8a) in 17 playoff games.
