Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Great Lakes Loons have had the highest-scoring offense in the Midwest League for a majority of the season and they once again showed why on Saturday night in an 11-6 win over the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field. Kody Hoese led the way going 2-for-5 accounting for six of the Loons' runs.
Hoese, who grew up a little over an hour west of South Bend in Merrillville, was playing in front of a handful of his family and friends as he drove in four runs on a double and his first career single-A triple. He played a part in both five-run innings for the Loons - the third and seventh.
The Loons' first five-run inning came against Cubs starter Derek Casey, who was facing the Loons for the fourth time this year. With Saturday included, Casey has totaled 18 innings against Great Lakes and has allowed 18 earned runs on 22 hits and nine walks. The Loons have had his number.
The Loons' second five-run inning came against Casey Ryan (L, 3-2). Romer Cuadrado took Ryan deep the moment he stepped out of the bullpen in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Justin Yurchak doubled, James Outman homered, Leonel Valera and Jacob Amaya singled and Hoese tripled before an out was recorded. Mark Washington (W, 2-1) was pitching for the Loons at the time and faced one above the minimum in two 1/3 innings.
After losing two straight, the Loons are back in the win column and will look to start a new win streak on Sunday afternoon. Game two of a four-game series against South Bend is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. EDT. Radio pregame coverage dawns at 1:35 on ESPN 100.9-FM.
