
Whitecaps Find Double Trouble in Loss

FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps grounded into double plays in each of the first three innings as part of a 7-4 loss in front of 7,557 fans at Parkview Field.
West Michigan falls to 35-75 and 40 games under the .500 mark for the first time in the 26-year history of the franchise. The Whitecaps have lost nine of their last ten games and the first five games of their eight-game road trip.
The Whitecaps struck first in the opening frame, as Andre Lipcius plated Wenceel Perez with an RBI-single to take a 1-0 lead. Ulrich Bojarski grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat in the first as the Whitecaps proceeded to bounce into three double plays in the first three innings of the contest. The TinCaps scored the next five runs of the game highlighted by run-scoring singles by Ethan Skender and Justin Lopez to take a 5-1 lead. In the sixth, Lipcius brought home his second run of the night with a run-scoring double. Rey Rivera's RBI-single followed before the "Caps left runners at the corners to end the threat. In the bottom of the frame, a sacrifice fly by Jawuan Harris added an insurance run to give Fort Wayne a 6-3 lead. The "Caps added a single tally in the seventh but came no closer as West Michigan lost by a score of 7-4.
TinCaps starting pitcher Cullen Dana (2-0) struggled through 5.1 innings allowing six hits and four walks but escaped by allowing just two runs in collecting his second win of the season. Whitecaps reliever Austin Sodders (0-2) struggled through 3.2 innings of relief in allowing five runs in taking his second loss of the year. Fort Wayne reliever Henry Henry finished the contest with 2.1 innings of relief to earn his eighth save of the season. West Michigan falls to 35-75 in 2019 and 14-27 in the second half. The TinCaps improve to 49-60 and 16-25 in the second-half standings. The TinCaps placed the leadoff hitter on base in each of the first six frames and seven of their eight at-bats overall. Meanwhile, Fort Wayne leadoff man Tucupita Marcano went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a sacrifice fly in the victory.
