South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - South Carolina Stingrays' Captain Brad Farynuk battled through a fractured toe to help lead the Rays to a 3-2 shootout victory of the Charlotte Checkers at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"The guys really came out to play," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The story of the shootout was [Jonathan] Boutin who was spectacular in net."

The Rays came out exactly the way they wanted to in the first period, playing strong defensively, and coming up with the lead. The lone goal in the period came from Captain Brad Farynuk playing in his first game since fracturing his toe blocking a shot. The goal came at 12:29 and was assisted by Trent Campbell and Scott Romfo. The Rays out shot the Checkers by a large margin in the period, limiting them to only three while firing 13 of their own.

The second period felt much like the first, as they Rays were able to get the majority of chances, and capitalize on one of them. At the 17:42 mark of the period, Maxime Lacroix was able to knock the puck in the net after a scramble in front of the crease on the power play. The goal was Lacroix's 26th of the year and was assisted by Travis Morin and Michael Dubuc. The score made it a 2-0 score going into the final frame.

Fatigue began to sink in as the third period rolled along, and Charlotte began to chip away. P.J. Corsi was able to cut the lead in half, notching his 7th goal of the year to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the period, Julian Brouillette tied the game up at two to send it into overtime.

After five scoreless minutes of overtime, the Rays and Checkers headed to a shootout. After both Ryan Hillier and Campbell scored in the first round, Mike Bayrack and Dubuc each missed. In the third period, Lacroix gave the Rays the 2-1 lead after three rounds. With the game on the line, David Rutheford tied the shootout at two goals a piece and with a Jeff Jakaitis save, sent it to a sixth round. When Corsi missed his chance, Morin took advantage of the opportunity, and potted the game winning, giving the Rays the 3-2 shootout victory over the Charlotte Checkers.

The winning goaltender was Jonathan Boutin who stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced and four of the six from the shootout. The losing goalie was Jakaitis who stopped 39 of 41 shots he faced and three of the six from the shootout. The Rays went 1-6 on the power play while killing off all seven short handed situations they faced.

The Rays will be back in action on Saturday night for Pink in the Rink Night. The Stingrays are painting the ice pink in an effort to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.
