Checkers defeated in shootout by Stingrays,3-2

Charleston, S.C. - The Checkers battled back from a two goal deficit in the third period and extended the game to a shootout where they eventually lost in sudden death to the South Carolina Stingrays by a score of 3-2.

The only goal of the first was scored by Stingrays captain Brad Farynuk when his wrist shot beat Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis through traffic on the blocker-side at 12:29.

During the second period, the Stingrays extended their lead on the power-play. South Carolina forward Travis Morin centered a pass for Maxime Lacroix who shot the puck past a sprawling Jakaitis at 17:42. This put the Stingrays up, 2-0 after two periods of action.

The Checkers came roaring back in the third frame to tie the contest. The first Charlotte goal was scored by P.J. Corsi as he banged in a loose puck near the crease behind Stingrays netminder Jonathan Boutin at 6:17. The tying goal came off a point shot from defenseman Julien Brouillette through traffic past Boutin at 15:44. The game would go to an overtime period but neither team could find the back of the net.

In the shootout, the Checkers received goals from Ryan Hiller and David Rutherford while the Stingrays struck with Trent Campbell, Lacroix and the game winner by Travis Morin.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on March 1st against the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 5 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
