Toledo Mud Hens News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ronny Rodriguez led off the game with a home run to center, but the Toledo Mud Hens had their five-game winning streak snapped by the Louisville Bats in a 2-1 decision on Friday at Louisville Slugger Field.
Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with a home run and a single to extend his hitting streak to a team-high eight consecutive games. Dawel Lugo went 1-for-4 with a single while Christin Stewart reached base twice, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Artie Lewicki was unfortunate to pick up the loss, striking out a season-best eight batters in 6.1 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. Making his first appearance at the Triple-A level since the 2015 Pacific Coast League season, Caleb Thielbar pitched 1.1 shutout innings in relief before Mark Montgomery recorded the final out in the bottom of the eighth.
Rodriguez wasted no time getting the Mud Hens on the board, leading off the contest by hitting a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center for his fourth home run of the campaign. Toledo looked to add to its early lead, as Lugo ripped a one-out single into center and advanced to second on a stolen base Stewart drew a walk.
After Jim Adduci struck out swinging, the Mud Hens loaded the bases on a scary sequence. Edwin Espinal was struck in the face by a pitch and left the game, though he exited the field under his own power. Huffman took over as a pinch-runner, staying in the game to bat sixth and play first base. Gabriel Quintana then flew out to left to keep the Mud Hens' advantage at 1-0.
Louisville responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Brandon Dixon responded with a two-out solo shot to deep center to knot the score at 1-1. The Bats threatened to grab the lead in the bottom of the third when Tyler Goeddel reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a Mason Williams single, and tagged up to third on a Dixon flyout to right. However, D.J. Peterson also flew out to right to retire the side and keep it a 1-1 ballgame heading into the fourth.
The game remained deadlocked until Louisville scored one run on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Garrett Boulware whacked a ground-rule double to right before Blake Trahan hit a bunt single to third to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Goeddel fouled out to third, but Williams doubled into center to drive in Boulware and give the hosts a 2-1 edge. However, Lewicki was able to limit the damage by striking out Dixon and Peterson to end the inning.
Toledo looked to turn the tables with the top of the order due up in the eighth. Rodriguez led off the frame with a single to third, advancing into scoring position courtesy of an errant pickoff attempt. This time, the Mud Hens were unable to mount a comeback, as Lugo struck out swinging and Stewart flew out to left.
The Mud Hens return to Louisville Slugger Field tomorrow night for the second game of their series against Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
