LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Powered by starter Robert Stephenson's two-hit performance, the Louisville Bats (12-19) topped the division-leading Toledo Mud Hens (21-12), 2-1, Friday evening at Louisville Slugger Field. Following a leadoff home run from Toledo, Stephenson and the Louisville bullpen held the Mud Hens' offense in check for the remainder of the contest.

Stephenson improved to 2-4 as he went six innings, allowing only one run with six strikeouts. Toledo starter Artie Lewicki was solid in defeat, striking out eight, while giving up seven hits and two earned runs. Bats reliever Kevin Quackenbush picked up his third save of the season as he struck out two in the top of the ninth.

The Mud Hens struck quickly as center fielder Ronny Rodriguez sent the second pitch of the ballgame over the left field fence. Later in the inning, they threatened with bases loaded, but Stephenson induced a fly-out that kept the score at 1-0. In the bottom half of the first, Bats first baseman Brandon Dixon knotted the contest with a 446-foot, two-out bomb to deep center field. Dixon turned in a solid performance Friday, going 2-for-4 and picking up his team-leading eighth stolen base of the year in the eighth.

Stephenson faced a bit of trouble in the top of the third as he walked two Mud Hens, but he soon settled in and retired the final 11 Toledo batters of his stint. In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of doubles from catcher Garrett Boulware and center fielder Mason Williams helped put Louisville ahead for good at 2-1. Williams also turned in a 2-for-4 night with one RBI, while shortstop Blake Trahan tallied a 2-for-3 outing.

Although the Bats were unable to add insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth, the one-hit performance of relievers Kevin Shackelford, Tanner Rainey and Quackenbush maintained the slim margin and sealed the win.

The Bats and Mud Hens will continue their three-game set Saturday evening at Louisville Slugger Field, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Right-hander Zach Neal (2-0, 4.15) will toe the rubber for Louisville as Toledo counters with southpaw Ryan Carpenter (1-3, 5.01).
