Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Norfolk Tides scored four runs in a rough seventh inning for the Gwinnett Stripers, who went on to lose the game 10-3 Friday night at Coolray Field.
It was a 3-2 ballgame entering the seventh, but the Tides sent nine batters to the plate in the inning, tallying all four runs against Stripers reliever Rex Brothers.
Jaycob Brugman led off with a single, followed by a strikeout and a fielder's choice that moved Brugman to second. Norfolk broke the game open with two outs in the inning as five straight runners reached base. A Joey Rickard RBI single was followed by an Andrew Susac (3) two-run homer to make it 6-2. DJ Stewart singled and Garabez Rosa was hit by a pitch. Then with Drew Dosch batting, Brothers threw two wild pitches allowing Stewart to score. Dosch walked in the at-bat and Brothers was pulled after 0.2 innings with four hits, four earned runs, a walk and a hit batter. Josh Ravin induced a groundout to end the inning.
Norfolk's four-run outburst came after the exit of Max Fried, who worked 4.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Fried (L, 1-1) loaded the bases in the third inning with three consecutive singles to start, but got the next two outs. But he bounced a pitch to Susac that got away from catch Rob Brantly, allowing Brugman to score the game's first run. After a walk to Susac reloaded the bases, Stewart singled to bring home Adrian Marin and extend the lead to 2-0. A fourth-inning Dosch double followed by a Stewart single made it 3-0.
The Stripers got back within striking distance in the fifth inning after a Danny Santana leadoff walk. Phil Gosselin (1) then smacked a two-run home run to left off Tim Melville to bring the score to 3-2. It was Gosselin's first home run in a Gwinnett uniform since July 7, 2014 vs. Syracuse.
But the seventh inning breakdown - along with three more runs scored against David Peterson in the ninth - was too much for Gwinnett to recover from. The Stripers tacked on one more run in the ninth after a Rio Ruiz double and an Austin Riley single put runners at first and third; Sean Kazmar Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Ruiz, but the Stripers couldn't quite muster a rally.
Riley's ninth-inning single extended his hitting streak to five in as many games at the Triple-A level and nine games overall including Double-A. Two other bright spots for Gwinnett were the performances of Luke Jackson and Ravin: Jackson struck out five of the six batters he faced over 2.0 perfect innings, while Ravin kept his ERA at 0.00 with 1.1 innings allowing one hit and two walks.
All nine batters had a hit for Norfolk, with Alex Presley, Sharlon Schoop and Brugman all notching three-hit games. Melville (W, 5-0) pitched into the ninth inning, but was pulled after the Riley single; his final line was 8.0 innings with four hits, three earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
The Stripers (13-20) seek redemption Saturday against the Tides (18-14) with a 6:05 p.m. start at Coolray Field for "Star Wars" Night. Right-hander Matt Wisler (1-1, 3.52 ERA) goes for Gwinnett, while righty Asher Wojciechowski (1-1, 4.95 ERA) will start for Norfolk. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 5:35 p.m.
