From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians avoided a series loss with a 7-1 rout in Louisville Thursday night. J.T. Brubaker induced three double plays en route to six scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut, and the offense was powered by home runs from Jordan Luplow, Eric Wood and Wyatt Mathisen. Luplow's shot off Cody Reed gave Indy a 2-0 lead in the sixth, and Wood's blast opened a three-run seventh. Austin Meadows roped a two-run double with the bases full in that frame. Then in the eighth, Mathisen belted his second homer of 2018 and first in a Tribe uniform to bury the Bats in a 7-1 hole. Kevin Newman (2-for-4, 2B, R), Meadows (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R, SB), Luplow (2-for- 4, HR, 2 RBI, R) highlighted the 13-hit outburst.
OKAY, YOU CAN STAY: J.T. Brubaker earned the win in his Triple-A debut last night with six shutout innings at Louisville. He erased baserunners with double plays turned behind him in the first, second and fourth innings. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out two. Brubaker, 24, was a sixth-round selection by the Pirates in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Akron. He was especially dominant for Double-A Altoona this year, going 2-2 with a 1.80 ERA (7 ER/35.0 IP) and team-high 35 strikeouts at the time of his promotion to Indy.
COME WHAT MAY: Jordan Luplow hit just .180 through the first month of the season, but he's turned the tables at the dish since the calendar flipped to May. The slugger has hit safely in each of his eight starts this month, posting a .481 average (13-for-27). He has seven extra-base hits already in May (three homers, two triples, two doubles) after totaling just one double and one triple over 18 games in April. He has been at his best this season with runners on base, posting a .362 clip (17-for-47) and 1.085 OPS.
PA8LO REYES: Tribe utilityman Pablo Reyes went just 4-for-20 in his first seven games with the Tribe. Over his last nine games (eight starts), he's riding an eight-game hitting streak; he's batted .393 (11-for-28) with three doubles and one home run during that stretch. He launched his first career Triple-A homer in Wednesday's loss. The versatile Reyes has started at second, third, shortstop and center field for the Indians so far this season.
EXTRA EFFORT: Eight of Indy's 13 hits last night went for extra bases (five doubles, three homers), eclipsing its total of seven extra-base hits through the first three games of the series in Louisville. The Indians already have 10 games this season with five or more extra-base knocks, and they own an 8-2 record in those contests. The Tribe's three dingers last night also matched a season high, originally set on April 27 at Columbus (W, 17-5).
SLUMP BUSTED: Mired in a 2-for-24 slump over a seven-game stretch, Austin Meadows broke out with a 3-for-5 showing last night at the dish, including a two-run double with the bases loaded in the seventh to push Indy's advantage to 5-0. The recently turned 23-year-old is batting .276 (27-for-98) with one home run, seven doubles, 10 RBI and six stolen bases through 26 games this season. The left-handed batter has hit southpaws extremely well this year, posting a .371 average (13-for-35).
PINCH-HIT HOMER: Wyatt Mathisen's first Triple-A home run came during a pinch-hit appearance in last night's victory. It was just the 16th homer of his seven-year professional career and first as a pinch-hitter. The pinch-hit blast was the first by a Tribe player since Jason Rogers on June 4, 2017 vs. Gwinnett.
STALLINGS STEALING: Jacob Stallings swiped third base as part of a double steal last night, just the 11th stolen base in 461 career games for the 28-year-old. Not a renowned burner on the basepaths, Stallings has managed to steal at least one base in each of his seven professional seasons.
CATCH US IF YOU CAN: Indy sits at or near the top of the league in several offensive categories. The Indians lead the IL in average (.270), doubles (82) and triples (13). They are also tied for first in slugging percentage (.419), despite having the third-fewest home runs in the league. The Indians rank second in fewest strikeouts (223) at the plate, as well.
