Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Headed into Friday's game at Athletic Park, the Mud Hens had dropped its previous two games in the series and looked to salvage the final game of the three game set. Taking the ball for Toledo was Luis Cessa one of the newest members of the Hens' pitching staff. Cessa was acquired in the trade the Tigers made with the New York Mets to ship Yoenis Cespedes. The right hander looked to earn his second win of the season for the struggling Toledo pitching staff.

Durham's Richie Schaffer had other ideas for Cessa in the first, as the slick hitting infielder slugged a two RBI base hit and put the Bulls up 2-0 early. Schaffer also scored in the inning after a two run moon shot off the bat of Joey Butler, stretching the lead to 4-0. With an up-hill climb ahead of them, the Hens slowly but surely tacked away at the deficit off Durham starter Scott Diamond whom the Mud Hens hit around hard in the last series against the Bulls. Manny Pina drove in Marc Krauss for the first Toledo run of the game, with a sharp single in the second.

In the top of the sixth with the score notched at 5-1, the Hens ended Diamond's day on the hill after Jefry Marte brought around two more runs with a two RBI single to left, closing the gap to just two runs. Manny Pina stepped to the plate with two on later in the frame and delivered once again to tie the ballgame at five with a single scoring Jefry Marte and Steven Moya. With the momentum in their favor Steven Moya took advantage off Bulls' reliever Andrew Bellatti. With one out and one on in the seventh Moya hit his 24th double of the year scoring Alexi Casilla and coming all the way back to take the lead in the seventh.

Cessa exited the game after the fifth and gave way to Joe Mantiply, the most recent call up to the Toledo pen. In the bottom of the eighth with Richie Schaffer on third Nick Franklin hit a game tying sac fly off Mantiply and the back and forth battle went to extra innings in Durham tied at six a piece.

The extra innings carried deep into the North Carolina night as neither offense had an answer for the other teams' shutdown bullpens. The Hens strong punch out of the pen came from Warwick Saupold as he stifled the Bulls' offense in both the tenth and eleventh with three total strikeouts. Alberto Cabrera also contributed two scorless innings in the twelfth and thirteenth . Cabrera then gave way to Jeff Ferrell in the fourteenth looking to shut down Durham one more time. However, with runners at first and second Durham's Nick Franklin delivered the walk-off single for the win, tagging Ferrell with the loss.

The Hens are back in action on Saturday in a doubleheader in Norfolk against the Tides, first pitch set for 5:05 PM. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
