Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: Last night's rubber match with Lehigh Valley was postponed due to rain. The teams will make it up during a doubleheader on Thursday, Aug. 27 with game one starting at 5:35 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The SWB RailRiders halted a three-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night at PNC Field.
FIGHT THE LAW, GUESS WHO WINS?: Aaron Judge launched his seventh SWB homer in the win. The left-center blast in the fourth proved to be the deciding blow. Four of Judge's last 12 hits have been homers. He leads the Yankees' farm system with 19 longballs including a dozen at Double-A.
RISPY BUSINESS: The RailRiders went 1-for-10 with men in scoring position on Wednesday while stranding 10. The team has gone 2-for-31 (.065) with men at second and/or third over its last four games with 33 total RailRiders left on base. That includes going 1-for-16 (.063) in consecutive losses at Rochester last weekend.
BACK ON COURSE: The RailRiders snapped their first three-game losing streak since the All-Star Break. They have dropped consecutive games only twice in that span. Wednesday's win helped avoid the longest skid for Dave Miley's team since a run of four straight setbacks from July 8-11.
HOME SWEET HOME: The RailRiders are back to .500 for the year at home. The club has gone 11-3 at PNC Field since July 24 and has a chance tonight to pull above sea level for the first time since an Opening Night-win against Syracuse.
OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD: The Rochester Red Wings polished off a three-game sweep of the Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday afternoon, 6-0. Pat Dean (10-10) blanked the Bisons on six hits over nine innings for a complete-game shutout. The Red Wings have won five in a row to draw within 4.5 games of the RailRiders while leapfrogging now third-place Buffalo. The Bisons began today 6.5 games out. Both Rochester and Buffalo had last night off. Only three IL games were played between scheduled off days and two rainouts.
A LOOK AHEAD: The RailRiders have five games remaining against both Rochester and Buffalo. SWB has played above .500 against the other three teams in the division (29-15), but has losing ledgers versus the Red Wings (7-8) and Bisons (5-7). SWB has magic numbers of 15 and 13 with Rochester and Buffalo respectively. Any combination of SWB wins and losses by each foe totaling to those figures would cement a higher finish for the RailRiders. SWB's magic number for both Lehigh Valley and Syracuse's divisional eliminations sits at five.
WHITE KNUCKLERS: Fifteen (54%) of SWB's last 28 games have been decided by one run and 21 (75%) have come down to two or less. It has gone 19-9 (.679) over the longer span and owns the IL's best one-run record at 25-16 (.610).
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMIN: Ben Gamel has hits in 21 of his last 23 with multiple knocks in 14 of those games. In that time, he has slashed .404/.465/.708/1.173 with 14 extra-base hits (5-3B, 4HR), 17RBIs and 20 runs scored. SWB's MVP candidate leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and co-paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel entered today with the IL's fourth-best batting average (.306). He also ranks among the IL's best in hits (4th, 132), slugging (2nd, .479), extra-base hits (5th, 43), runs scored (T-2nd, 68) and total bases (4th, 207).
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa has also enjoyed a fantastic 2015. He stands in front of Gamel with a .307 average, good for third in the IL, and ranks among the circuit's best in OBP (5th, .366) and TPA/K ratio (1st, 19.52:1).
