Buffalo Bisons News Release

Buffalo's bats were alive, unlike the zombies in Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons had a dominating performance both offensively and defensively as they shutout the Syracuse Chiefs 9-0 in front of over 14,000 fans.

Buffalo's offensive momentum early in the game was just what they needed, especially after allowing Rochester score multiple runs in their previous series with them earlier this week.

Dalton Pompey lead off the first inning with a single to shallow left field, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Munenori Kawasaki to put Pompey in scoring position. Andy Burns drove in Pompey with a single to shallow center field for the early lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ty Kelly hit a two-run RBI single to right field to extend Buffalo's lead to 3-0.

After adding a run in the second and fourth innings, the Bisons didn't look back. After a lead off walk from Kelly in the fifth, Josh Thole hit and RBI double to the right field corner to add to Buffalo's lead. Kawasaki drove in another run later in the fifth by a single to right field, but Thole scored on a throwing error.

The Bisons added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to solidify a shutout victory. With two outs and Thole on base for his second double of the night, Jonathan Diaz hit an RBI double to right field, extending Buffalo's lead to 8-0. The Herd would score their ninth run of the night off of an RBI single from Dalton Pompey.

Four members of the Herd had three-hit nights. Burns went 3 for 4 with a walk, driving in two runs and scoring two more. Thole went 3 for 5 and scored twice. Pompey added a three-hit night with two runs scored while Alex Hassan's three this included a double and RBI.

Even though the offense dominated, so did Buffalo's pitching staff. Bisons' starter Scott Copeland pitched seven shutout innings to earn a quality start and his tenth win of the season. Copeland is the first pitcher since 2010 (Dillon Gee, 13 and Pat Misch, 11) to earn their tenth win of the season.

Copeland struggled in his last outing for the Herd. The Bisons' starter pitched his shortest start of the season last week against Syracuse in an 8-2 loss. "Just pound the strike zone and try not to do too much," Copeland said. "I think that's what happened last time. Things kept going out of control and then I tried to throw to hard and then it was going straight and the ball was going out of the ballpark. Just have to keep it where it is and keep it under control."

Buffalo continues their Thruway Cup matchup on Saturday at 7:05 with Todd Redmond scheduled to start for the Herd. The series will then conclude on Sunday at 1:05 before going back on the road for a three-game series against Lehigh Valley.
