Portland Winterhawks News Release

Regina, Sask. - Two goals from Connor Bedard in a three-goal second period helped the Regina Pats (21-19-1-1) edge the Winterhawks (28-8-2-1) by a 4-3 final on Saturday night. Dante Giannuzzi finished with 34 saves for Portland.

Each team scored once in a comparatively quiet first period, with Braxton Whitehead notching Regina's first of the night at 4:38 and Robbie Fromm-Delorme responding for Portland at 8:42. Fromm-Delorme's 21st of the year came on the power play as he whacked home a rebound from Klassen's shot.

The game opened up in the second period, and the Winterhawks grabbed the first of the frame just 2:35 in. Diego Buttazzoni kicked off a rush with Marcus Nguyen, then managed to chip home a lofted puck at the left side of the net after Nguyen sent a chip through the offensive zone. From there, though, Regina's stars went to work in short order - Alexander Suzdalev potted a between-the-legs goal at 7:23, then Bedard bagged his first of the night on the power play two minutes later. Klassen responded with a highlight-reel effort of his own at 17:47, weaving through the Pats' defense and tucking a shot into the top corner for his 22nd of the year, but Bedard restored his team's lead with a breakaway strike for the eventual game-winner late in the period.

The Winterhawks appeared to tie the game at four with 17 seconds to play as Kyle Chyzowski managed to deflect home an O'Brien one-timer, but the goal was disallowed. With the road trip wrapped up, Portland heads home for three home games in four days next weekend, starting Friday night against Victoria.
