Prince Albert Raiders News Release
The Prince Albert Raiders picked two important points on Saturday night, downing the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in overtime. Defenceman Terrell Goldsmith scored the overtime winner, as the Raiders picked up a W in their lone road game of the weekend.
Despite putting up just three shots in the first period, the Oil Kings took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. 6:22 into the game right after an offensive zone faceoff, Carter Kowalyk fired a slapshot from the point. The shot worked its way far side, before hitting the inside of the post and in past Tikhon Chaika. The defenceman's third goal of the season put Edmonton up 1-0.
With 20 minutes in the books, that's what the score was heading into the second, with the Raiders leading 6-3 in shots, and both clubs going 0/1 on the powerplay.
In the second period, the Raiders were able to take the lead, thanks to goals from Ryder Ritchie and Keaton Sorensen. At the 12:59 mark of the middle frame, Ritchie buried his 12th goal of the season to tie things up. After a point shot from Eric Johnston was tipped in front by Sloan Stanick was stopped by Logan Cunningham, the rebound came right in front for Ritchie. The rookie banged a shot home through Cunningham's five hole to make it a 1-1 game.
With 3:28 to go in the second, Justice Christensen was assessed a double minor for cross checking, giving the Oil Kings a chance to take the lead back. However, instead of Edmonton capitalizing, it was Prince Albert who struck shorthanded, and it was Sorensen leading the charge. Stealing a puck in the defensive zone, Sorensen sped down the ice on a two on one rush. Electing to keep the puck, Sorensen toe dragged around the poke check attempt of an Oil King defender, and roofed a shot top corner past Cunningham. All of a sudden, the momentum shifted towards the visiting side, as the green and gold took a 2-1 lead late in the second.
2-1 would be the score after 40 minutes, with the Raiders holding a 19-9 lead in shots.
Edmonton got off to a quick start in the third period, tying things up just 28 seconds in with the dying seconds of their powerplay ticking away. At the point, Gavin Hodnett faked a shot before sending a pass near the crease. Waiting for the pass was Rhett Melnyk backdoor, and he was able to tap home his 11th goal of the season to make it a 2-2 game.
That tie was broken 1:03 later, as the Raiders took a one goal lead once again. Putting in work in the neutral zone, Aiden Oiring stole the puck from an Oil King defender, and walked in all alone on a breakaway. Oiring fired a shot top shelf over Cunningham. His second goal as a Raider, and seventh of the season gave Prince Albert a 3-2 lead, still early in the third period.
With 7:03 left in the third, the Oil Kings tied things up again with two seconds remaining on a powerplay. It was Rilen Kovacevic who got on the board, sniping a shot from the top of the right circle. For the second time in the contest, Edmonton tied the score on a powerplay, as it became a 3-3 game on Kovacevic's tenth goal of the season.
60 minutes solved nothing, as overtime would be needed to find a winner.
2:16 into the overtime frame, the Raiders sealed the deal, as the game's winning goal was scored by an unexpected hero during three on three play. A two on one rush developed by Ryder Ritchie and Terrell Goldsmith led to the latter burying the GWG. A shot from Ritchie was stopped by Cunningham, but Goldsmith came barreling in for the rebound, and banged the second chance home. His third goal of the season gave the Raiders an important two points in Edmonton, as they swept the season series with the 4-3 win.
The Raiders (15-23-2-0) return home on Wednesday night for a meeting with the Winnipeg ICE at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is 7pm.
