Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings battled back from a pair of third period deficits but ultimately fell 4-3 in overtime to the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings and Raiders skated in a very defensive minded first period that saw the two clubs combine for just nine shots on goal, but good news for the Oil Kings - one of theirs snuck through.
At 6:22 of the first period, the Oil Kings won an offensive zone faceoff to Gavin Hodnett who laid the puck back to Vojtech Port at the left-point, he then quickly zipped a cross-ice pass into the wheelhouse of Carter Kowalyk at the right-point, and he pounded home a one-timer for his third goal of the season.
In the second period, the Oil Kings maintained their one-goal lead until the final seven minutes of the middle stanza when they would yield a pair of goals to the visitors to head to the second intermission down 2-1.
Ryder Ritchie levelled the score at the 12:59 mark after he was able to deposit a rebound past a bothered Logan Cunningham in the Edmonton crease.
Keaton Sorensen gave the Raiders the lead with a shorthanded marker at 16:58 of the period after he lasered a shot into the Edmonton net on a 2-on-1 rush.
In the third period, the Oil Kings quickly equalized the score after Hodnett found Rhett Melnyk open for a back-door tap-in for his 11th of the season on an Edmonton power play just 28 seconds in.
The Raiders responded with another go-ahead goal 57 seconds later when Aiden Oiring took advantage of an Edmonton turnover and buried a breakaway opportunity.
With 7:03 left in regulation, the Oil Kings drew even once again on another power play goal, this time from Rilen Kovacevic as he ripped a shot top corner from the right-circle for his 10th goal of the campaign.
The game would remain deadlocked at three through regulation time. In overtime, Terrell Goldsmith gave the Raiders the extra point after he pounced on a rebound in the Edmonton crease and shoveled in the winner.
The Oil Kings have now picked up points in three of their last four games (2-1-1-0).
Cunningham made 24 saves in the game for the Oil Kings, while Tikhon Chaika made 13 saves for the win in the Prince Albert crease. Edmonton went 2-for-5 on the power play, the Raiders were 0-for-4.
Next up, the Oil Kings welcome former Oil King Jaxsen Wiebe and the Prince George Cougars to town on Saturday, January 21 at 7:00 P.M.
