VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that Casey Hankinson has been named the Admirals' 2002-2003 American Specialty/HG Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.

A regular visitor to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Hankinson always spends time with patients ranging in age from young children to teenagers, sitting in the playroom with the young patients, and stopping by individual rooms of those who were too ill to leave their beds.

At one of the first trips to CHKD this year, Hankinson befriended a young girl undergoing chemotherapy. He went back to visit her several times at CHKD, and when the team was on the road, he would check in with her parents to see how she was progressing. He even brought the girl and her family to an Admirals game as his special guests.

When the Calder Cup visited Hampton Roads, Hankinson accompanied it to Max & Erma's Restaurant, signing autographs for passersby while encouraging them to drop a donation into Cup for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). At the Admirals' recent jersey auction for the MDA, Hankinson's sweater garnered the second-highest bid on the team at $2,000, thanks to his popularity with the fans.

In recognition of his efforts, Hankinson will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming game.

Hankinson is now a finalist for the AHL's 2002-2003 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall American Specialty/HG Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 28 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2003 Finals as the 2002-2003 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
