Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates announced today that their NHL affiliate, the Washington Capitals, has recalled center Trent Whitfield. He is expected to join the Capitals in time for their game in Ottawa on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

This is Whitfield's second recall to Washington. He played nine games with the Capitals in December, registering no points and four penalty minutes. In 64 games with the Pirates this season, he has a team-leading 27 goals and 34 assists for 61 points. That point total ties him with Peter Ferraro for the team lead. Earlier this season, Whitfield set a new team record with his fifth shorthanded goal of the season on February 15 at Norfolk. He also tied a franchise record for points in a game with six points (2-4-6) against the St. John's Maple Leafs on December 7. That feat also earned him Sher-Wood/AHL Player of the Week honors.

Whitfield was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round in 1996. He was signed as a free agent by the Capitals in the summer of 1998. He has played in 95 career NHL games, all but one with the Capitals, scoring two goals and seven points and amassing 67 penalty minutes in that time. Prior to the 2002-2003 season, the native of Estevan, Saskatchewan had appeared in 193 games with the Pirates, totaling 51 goals, 74 assists and 125 points.

The Pirates are back in action on Thursday when they visit Lowell. They'll host the Worcester IceCats on Saturday, March 29 at 7:05 p.m. and the Saint John Flames on Sunday, March 30 at 5:05 p.m. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale at the Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets.
