Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose are proud to announce that forward Jimmy Roy has been named the Manitoba Moose 2002-2003 American Specialty/HG Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. This is the second consecutive season that Roy has been the team's AHL Man of the Year recipient. The award honours the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.

Jimmy Roy has worked tirelessly throughout the Manitoba community in his past six seasons with the Moose. Roy started Roy's Rugats for the 2002-03 season. He purchased and donated four tickets for each Saturday home game for a child and his/her family at the Children's Wish Foundation. In addition to the tickets, the child and family members were escorted to the dressing room following the game for a meet and greet and dressing room tour with Roy. He presented each child with a personalized autograph hockey stick and a family pass to IMAX movie theater.

A few other highlights from his 2002-03 season: He became an honourary chair for the Children's Wish Dinner and did public service announcements for them. He was a children's favorite at the Moose Children's Hospital Visit in December. Roy went unannounced to visit a child at the Children's Hospital, who had become ill at a Moose hockey game. He signed autographs and had them say hi to the child on the Moose radio broadcast to keep his spirits up. Roy was the official Moose spokesmen for Manitoba Public Insurance - his Anti-Drinking and Driving Public Service Announcements played every home game. The Sioux Lookout, ON native was part of the first-ever Christmas Skills Camp at the Winnipeg Arena where he assisted in drills and teaching hockey skills to kids from age six to 12. In addition, he went to read to school kids at Dieppe School during "I Love To Read Month" in February.

In recognition of his efforts, Roy will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

Jimmy Roy is now a finalist for the AHL's 2002-2003 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall American Specialty/HG Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 28 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2003 Finals as the 2002-2003 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
