Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Comstock Park, MI - Hector Guevara had two hits and drove in a run for the fifth straight game on Monday night, but the Hot Rods (9-9, 50-38) dropped their final meeting with West Michigan (10-8, 42-45), 4-2. The Hot Rods dropped two of three in the series and finished their season series against the Whitecaps with an 8-4 record.
For the second straight game, the Hot Rods jumped on top with a pair of first inning runs. Consecutive singles from Cody Rogers and Midwest League Player of the Week Derek Dietrich put runners at the corners for Phil Wunderlich. The slugger brought Rogers home on a sacrifice fly to deep center field for the first run of the inning. After Dietrich was caught stealing, a pair of walks led to Guevara's run-scoring single to right for a 2-0 lead.
Braulio Lara made the early run support stand up during his first time through the order, but the Whitecaps got to him the second time around. With runners at second and third, the Whitecaps scored consecutive runs on a groundout and a single to center. Another base hit led to another RBI groundout to put the Whitecaps on top, 3-2.
Lara left the game after five, as did West Michigan starter Brian Flynn. Lara allowed three unrs on six hits, striking out five and walking two. Flynn gave up two first-inning runs, but nothing else. He surrendered five hits and walked two.
West Michigan added to its lead with a run in the sixth against Austin Hubbard. With one out the Hot Rods couldn't complete a double play with men at the corners, leading to an RBI for Steven Moya and a 4-2 advantage.
Guevara finished the game 2-4 with his 29th RBI of the season. He had five hits and drove in four runs in the three-game set. Steve Tinoco, Robby Price, and Rogers all had good nights, each reaching base three times in the loss.
The Hot Rods will now enjoy an off-day on Tuesday while they bus to Cedar Rapids, IA to begin a three-game series starting on Wednesday night with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The first game of the series is at 6:35 PM CDT. The pitching match-up features LHP C.J. Riefenhauser (5-5, 2.56) against Cedar Rapids LHP Max Russell (4-9, 3.59).
