South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Dayton, OH - An obscure rule and odd scheduling helped the South Bend Silver Hawks end an eight game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Dayton Dragons in a rain-shortened contest at Fifth Third Field on Monday night.
South Bend turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The rains hit in the middle of the sixth inning, washing out the rest of the game. Technically, since the Dragons did not get their final at-bat after the Silver Hawks just took the lead, the game should have been suspended. However, since this is the last time the two teams will face each other this season, the Silver Hawks were awarded the victory per an interpretation of the Baseball Rule Book (Rule 4.10 and 4.12).
South Bend rallied just before the rains hit in the top of the sixth inning. Ender Inciarte led off with a line drive single against Josh Smith (LP, 8-4). One out later, Zach Walters hit a double to put runners at second and third. After Yazy Arbelo popped out, Raywilly Gomez came through with a big two-out, two-RBI double to tie the game. Matt Helm followed with a double of his own to give the Silver Hawks a 3-2 lead.
The rains started just as the bottom of the sixth was set to begin, washing out the remainder of the contest.
Dayton took the lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to the speed of Billy Hamilton. He had a bunt single to start the inning, stole second, and then scored from second base when the throw from Raywilly Gomez ricocheted into shallow left field for an error and a 1-0 Dragons lead.
After scoring the unearned run in the first, Dayton added their only earned run against J.R. Bradley (WP, 3-12) in the bottom of the fifth. Juan Duran walked and scored from first on a Jefry Sierra triple to build the 2-0 lead.
After a much needed off day on Tuesday, the Silver Hawks continue the road trip against the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins) on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 8:00 PM Eastern Time with RHP Tyler Green (3-3, 4.72 ERA) going up against Beloit's RHP B.J. Hermsen (8-6, 3.52 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
