BELOIT, WI - The Beloit Snappers appeared to be off to a promising start this evening, with Daniel Santana, the first batter of the first inning, leading the team off with a hit giving the Snappers an early lead in the game. However, the LumberKings retaliated in the top of the 5th with an amazing 6 hits and 6 runs, downing the Snappers 8-2.

A.J. Achter, Beloit's starting pitcher, struggled in the top of the 5th inning, allowing back-to-back homeruns from Clinton's Tim Morris and Kalian Sams. Despite Beloit's best efforts, including a string of five different pitchers (Achter, Ben Tootle, Bart Carter, Jose Gonzalez, and Clinton Dempster), they were unable to keep the LumberKings from scoring in a relief effort. The LumberKings tacked on another mammoth home run from right-fielder, Sams, his second of the night.

The Snappers had numerous players contribute a spark to the offense, including right-fielder, Daniel Ortiz, who scored in a run late in the 9th, reducing the LumberKings lead to six. The spark proved too little too late and the Snappers' opportunity was squandered. Both teams started off the game tied for second in the Midwest League second half standings, but with this 8-2 win over the Snappers (10-8), the Clinton LumberKings (11-7) swiped the second place spot.

For the LumberKings, starting pitcher Anthony Fernandez nearly threw a complete game against the Snappers, as he started the ninth inning, but allowed a run and was then removed from the game for Jonathan Arias. Fernandez finished eight innings and held the Snappers offense to just two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Fernandez struck out a season-high nine batters.

Offensively, Mickey Wiswall, Tim Morris, Kelian Sams and Anthony Phillips all had multi-hit games in the win. Sams (2-for-4) led them with two home runs and two RBI. Morris (2-for-4) finished with three RBI, including his fifth inning home run off of Achter.

The Snappers only had seven hits on the night, two of them from Daniel Santana and Jairo Perez, both who were 2-for-4. Michael Gonzales didn't get a hit, but contributed an RBI and Ortiz also had an RBI.

The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game," goes to Daniel Ortiz, who provided an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. He finished 1-for-4 and his season batting average sits at .257.

The Snappers will attempt to regain their 2nd place position starting on Wednesday, July 13th, with a 3 game series versus the South Bend SilverHawks at 7pm in Beloit. Wednesday will mark another "Cash Back Wednesday" at Pohlman Field, where fans can enjoy Happy Hour all game long including 12oz drafts of Miller products and 12oz sodas are just $2.00 thanks to Ott-Schweitzer Distributing and Pepsi.
