LINCOLN, Neb. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats belted a season high five homers including three off the bat of Cristian Guerrero in a 13-0 rout of the Lincoln Saltdogs in the opener of a series on Monday night.

After collecting hits in each of the first two innings but coming up empty, the RailCats dropped three runs on Lincoln starter Tim Brown in the top of the third. Chris Carrara led off with a double, was sacrificed to third, and scored on a two-out single from Brad Boyer. Cristian Guerrero followed by blasting the first pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer to hand the RailCats a 3-0 edge.

Carrara helped the RailCats extend the lead in the top of the fifth, leading off with a single. Adam Klein walked and both runners moved up on a sacrifice. Boyer knocked in his second run with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game. Mike Rohde hit his second homer in as many nights in the sixth, clearing the wall in right to push the advantage up to 5-0. Brown pitched six innings and took the loss for Lincoln.

The RailCats blew the game open in the seventh, scoring five runs against reliever Nick Schreiber to take a 10-0 edge. Boyer singled with one away and again was along for the ride on a Guerrero homer, this one to right for his second of the game. Guerrero became the first ever RailCat to post 50 homers in a career with his first of the game and has connected on three homers in the last two games after hitting just two in the first 42 contests. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Mike Valadez who singled home a run. Carrara added a sac fly with Klein posting an RBI infield single to finish the frame.

Homers accounted for three more runs in the top of the ninth. Carrara, who scored every time he posted a hit in the game, led off with a single. With two away, Boyer drove an offering from Lincoln first baseman Phil Hawke over the wall in right for his second homer in as many nights as well, extending the lead to 12-0. Guerrero followed with his third homer of the game, accounting for the final tally.

Carlos Rivas, activated from the disabled list before the game as the RailCats released Zeb Engle, pitched six shutout innings to earn his first win of the season. Brian Grening tossed two innings and Jeremy Hauer one as the RailCats finished out their fourth shutout of the season by scoring a season high 13 runs. Guerrero drove home five runs and Boyer finished with four hits and four RBIs in the rout.

The series will continue on Tuesday night with another 7:05 p.m. contest. RHP Scott Shaw (4-3, 5.05) will make his league best 11th start for the RailCats while the Saltdogs counter with RHP Brett Harker (0-0, 9.00), who will make his first start of the year off the disabled list.

The RailCats return to U. S. Steel Yard on Saturday, June 2 for a 6:10 p.m. contest with Sioux Falls on Steel Day. The first 1,000 kids entering the U. S. Steel Yard on Steel Night will receive the ever-popular RailCats lunchbox with an all-new design, courtesy of Geminus Prevention Services and The Post-Tribune.
