Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

AMARILLO, Tx.---The Captains led Amarillo 16-5 in the sixth inning but Amarillo came all the way back to defeat Shreveport-Bossier 21-20 on a walk-off tenth-inning single by Tim Alberts, who tied an American Association record with six hits. Alberts had seven RBIs in the game as did Captains right fielder Bryan Sabatella, who was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.

Shreveport-Bossier allowed six runs in the sixth, five in the seventh, and four in the eighth, sending 27 batters to the plate over those three innings and taking a 20-19 lead into the ninth inning.

The Captains sent the game to extras when Mike Provencher hit a one-out homer to tie the game at 20 off Amarillo reliever Chad Povich (3-2). In the tenth, Captains reliever Dan Griffin (2-1) walked Adam de la Garza and Cyle Hankerd to lead off the inning, then got Lee Cruz to hit into a 5-3 double play, the third DP Cruz hit into on the night. Mike Provencher fielded Cruz's ground ball, stepped on third and threw to first to complete the double play. Griffin then fell behind Van Pope 2-0 and opted to intentionally walk him to face Alberts, who was 5-for-5 at that point. Alberts would single to left, scoring Hankerd ahead of Alex Cowart's throw for the win.

In the eighth, with the Captains up by three, Jason White led off the inning drawing a walk from Mark Haynes. Fehlandt Lentini then hit a ground ball to short that Uriak Marquez fielded and threw to second baseman Michael Diffie who dropped the throw on the force out at second. Adam de la Garza then single to load the bases. Hankerd would score White on a fly ball, followed by Lentini scoring on a Dan Griffin balk, his first of the year. Cruz's RBI double scored de la Garza to tie the game, followed by a Tim Alberts single to score Cruz with the go-ahed run, 20-19.

The game featured 17 extra-base hits and every starter scored a run except for the Captains' Andres Rodriguez and the Sox's Benji Johnson. The Captains knocked out four home runs---the ninth-inning game-tying blast by Provencher, a Robert Perry two-run homer in the seventh, Bryan Sabatella's three-run shot in the fourth, and Uriak Marquez's solo blast in the third.

Second baseman Diffie went 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs in his professional debut. He also made the eight-inning error at second base.

Twelve players had multiple-hit nights including Lee Cruz (4-for7, four runs, four RBIs), Jason White (2-for-4, three runs, RBI) and Benji Johnson (3-for-6, RBI). For Shreveport-Bossier, Sabatella was 4-for-5 with two runs and seven RBIs. Provencher went 3-for-6 with a double, home run, three runs and two RBIs. Robert Perry was 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a home run and three walks.

Captains starter Ryan DiPietro lasted five innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, while walking a season-high four and striking out three. Sox starter Justin Garcia went four innings, surrendering twelve hits and nine runs while walking two and striking out four. The Captains scorched Amarillo's middle relievers Brian Oliver and Gary Perinar for ten runs in 2.2 innings. Shreveport-Bossier relivers didn't fair much better, allowing 14 runs in 4.2 innings.

Shreveport-Bossier dropped the final two games of their series at Amarillo. They begin a four-game set with Grand Prairie June 27. Aaron Cunningham will take the mound for the Captains against Grand Prarie's Josh Rainwater. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
