American Association Game Recaps

Published on June 27, 2011 under American Association (AA) News Release

Amarillo 3, Fort Worth 0

The Cats just couldn't seem to figure out Amarillo starting pitcher Ryan Mitchell on Monday. The 6-foot-5 righty shut out Fort Worth in complete-game fashion, allowing two fewer hits (5) than he recorded strikeouts (7). And Amarillo batters had nearly as much trouble with Fort Worth's Mike Bacsik, who threw 7.1 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. But when the Sox got to the Fort Worth bullpen, they finally pushed some runs across - one in the eighth and two in the ninth - to take the three-run win. Sox 2B Adam De La Garza had two hits (both doubles) in five at-bats and batted in the go-ahead run in the eighth for Amarilo.

Grand Prairie 8, Shreveport-Bossier 5

AirHogs RF Greg Porter doubled in two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Shreveport-Bossier on Monday night. Playing with the lead, the AirHogs never allowed the Captains to lead or even tie the score. Porter had a game-high three RBI and was one of three AirHogs with multiple hits, joining DH Cesar Nicolas and C Chris McMurray with that distinction. Porter's first-inning double sparked a five-run inning, after which Grand Prairie trailed by no fewer than three runs the remainder of the night. Captains leadoff 3B Mike Provencher led all batters with three hits, the last of which was a seventh-inning solo homer that proved to be the last run of the game.

Gary SouthShore 13, Lincoln 0

Three RailCats belted home runs in the ball club's 13-0 win over Lincoln on Monday. But no one outperformed DH Cristian Guerrero. The first-year member of Gary SouthShore batted in five runs and scored three times to highlight an already impressive 3-for-5 night. The RailCats pitching staff, anchored by starter Carlos Rivas, allowed only four hits in total, blanking the SaltDogs while the Gary SoutShore lineup piled on the runs. Rivas pitched the first six shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks with a third-inning strikeout of Lincoln 1B/P Phil Hawke.

Wichita 10, El Paso 0

The Wingnuts used an eight-run burst in the third and fourth innings to vault ahead of El Paso and coast to a 10-0 victory. Starting pitcher Junior Guerra struck out eight Diablos batters in eight shutout innings while allowing a paltry two hits. The last of the eight early-inning runs came via the rare inside-the-park home run form CF Brent Clevlen. Ryan Patterson, who had three RBI on the night, also scored on the Clevlen home run. Six Wichita batters had at least two hits, with Juan Richardson's 4-for-4 performance leading the way. The Diablos get a chance to make up for the shutout Tuesday in Game 2 of their four-game series with the Wingnuts.
