Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts shutout the El Paso Diablos 10-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra tossed eight innings of two-hit shutout ball to earn his second win of the year. Guerra struck out a career-high eight batters while walking only three.
After a leadoff infield single to Stephen Douglas to begin the game, Guerra retired the next 12 hitters in a row, and did not allow another runner past first base until the top of the eighth. Guerra did not allow a fair ball out of the infield until Maikol Gonzalez' lineout to center with one out in the eighth.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the third, the Wingnuts strung together four consecutive hits to open a 3-0 lead. Mike Conroy singled through the right side and came around to score when Ryan Patterson doubled into the left field corner. Brent Clevlen sliced a double to the right-center field fence to drive in Patterson and make it 2-0. Juan Richardson, who finished the night 4 for 4, singled through the left side to drive in Wichita's third run.
The Wingnuts scored five more runs on two-out hits in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open. Josh Horn lined a single to center and was driven in from first on Jose Duran's hit-and-run double down the right field line. Conroy reached on an infield single that advanced Duran to third. After Conroy stole second base, Patterson dumped a single into center field that scored two more runs. Clevlen capped off the inning with the first inside-the-park home run in team history, lining a ball to the center field fence that bounced over the head of a diving Kory Drew.
Wichita added a run in the seventh on Josh Workman's sacrifice fly and tacked on their 10th of the night in the eighth inning when Conroy singled home Horn from second base.
The Diablos loaded the bases with two outs against Guerra in the top of the eighth. Duran helped keep the shutout intact though, with a sliding play to his right on a sharp groundball to second base by Albenis Machado. Michael Cotter then locked down the win with a scoreless ninth inning. With a runner on third and two outs, Cotter struck out Kevin Smith looking and retired Adam DeLeo on a foul popup to Thomas Fitzgerald at first base.
Reymond Cruz took the loss for El Paso, allowing nine earned runs in six and one-third innings. Cruz struck out three and walked one while allowing 13 hits.
Conroy, Patterson, Clevlen, and Horn all joined Richardson with multi-hit efforts.
The series continues on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson goes to the mound for the Wingnuts against El Paso lefty Adam Rowe. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
