Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- The Grand Prairie AirHogs got off to a good start in the first inning of the first game of a big mid-season series with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains, scoring five runs in the first before holding on late to win 8-5 in front of 1,162 at QuikTrip Park on Monday.

The AirHogs (30-13) jumped all over Aaron Cunningham (2-5) in the first after David Espinosa led off by reaching on an error. David Thomas was then hit by a pitch and Cesar Nicolas walked to load the bases after a double-steal. Greg Porter came up and launched a double to center to score two runs and John Alonso's groundout brought another, before the AirHogs re-loaded the bags with two outs on two more singles. Danny Figueroa then laid down a perfect bunt that hit third base to bring in a fourth run, and Espinosa singled to make it 5-0 after one.

After Josh Rainwater (7-2) pitched a 1-2-3 second, a single and two doubles in the third gave the AirHogs a 7-0 cushion. But Shreveport-Bossier (22-20) began to battle back in the fourth, scoring twice after a leadoff walk to cut into the AirHogs' lead.

Jake Taylor got one back for Grand Prairie on a solo homer in the fifth, but the Captains scored two more in the sixth, sparked again by a leadoff walk, to make it 8-4. After Mike Provencher homered to lead off the seventh against Rainwater to cut the AirHogs lead to three, Rainwater was removed for lefty Jason Moody, who got two outs but then was lifted himself after a two-out double by Andres Rodriguez.

Dustin Cameron stopped the Captains rally right there, getting Palmer Karr to fly out to end the seventh, before recording two strikeouts and a groundout in a perfect eighth. That set the stage for Jon Hunton to pitch a;lsdksa;ldk to pick up his 11th save of the season.

Notes: The AirHogs did not have another hit after Taylor's home run and only had two hits total after the second, although they did draw three walks and a hit batter...Each team had 10 hits in 34 at-bats...The two bullpens combined for five shutout innings, with one hit and three walks, along with six strikeouts...All nine AirHogs either got a hit or scored a run (or both).
