Grizzlies' Late Rally Falls Short in Loss to Freedom
July 13, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Working around a 24-minute power delay, the Grizzlies and Freedom wrapped up an extended two hour and fifty minute contest that saw Florence capture a 5-4 game two showcase on Friday night at GCS Ballpark.
Florence (28-22) held tight to the lead despite another late push by the Grizzlies (26-24) led by Chris McClendon's 3-for-4, two home runs, and four RBI. Gateway was down a single run in the bottom of the ninth stanza, but Richie Jimenez Jr. couldn't quite beat out the game-ending double play.
"It is a tough way to lose," mentioned McClendon, whose season's batting average is now notched at .300 after his recent tear. "It just wasn't enough tonight, but that is the beauty of this team and these guys. Tomorrow is always a new day."
Gateway reliever Phillip Reamy (3-1) saw his season's unbeaten mark blackened by a three run, two hit, eighth inning as he was charged the loss. Grizzlies' starter Paul Tremlin pitched six and two thirds innings of two hit - two run baseball to earn the no decision.
Brennen Flick claimed his sixth win of 2012 in relief, tossing one and two thirds frames with no runs on no hits.
Action resumes Saturday night at GCS Ballpark as the Grizzlies play host to the Freedom at 7:05 PM in game three of the series set. Gateway ace and Frontier League All-Star starter Tim Brown (5-2) will put his 1.93 ERA on the line in effort to lift the home club in the finale.
