Miners Fall to Joliet at Home

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were defeated by the Joliet Slammers 5-1. Shawn Gilblair pitched strong in his no-decision going six innings, giving up four hits and allowed one run. He walked four batters and struck out six.

The Slammers took an early lead off Southern Illinois with a solo home run off Gilblair by Slammers second baseman Hector Pellot to take a 1-0 lead. The Miners tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning 1-1 off Slammers starter Jim Schult, when Carlos Mendez hit a one out RBI double to score Jake Kaase.

Slammers starter Jim Schult pitched seven strong innings, giving up four hits and striking out ten batters. He gave up one run and walked one batter. The Slammers scored three runs off Miners reliever David Whigham in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead. Abel Nieves hit a base hit and RBI to score Patrick Norris who hit a one out triple. After Whigham left with runners on base, Miners reliever Ryan Quigley came in and gave up a base hit to Erik Lis to load the bases. Kyle Maunus hit a two RBI base hit to cap off the inning. All runs were charged to Whigham.

Joliet added another run in the top of the eighth inning off Quigley (unearned) as an error by Jake Kaase allowed Brad Netzel to score from third base. The Slammers would go on and win the game 5-1.

Ryan Quigley pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three runs. He allowed one unearned run and struck out one batter. Miners reliever Darrin Tew pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one walk. With the loss, the Miners fall to 29-20. The Miners are behind Traverse City by three games in the Eastern Division. The Miners and Slammers begin game two of the three game set tomorrow night at 7:05.
