Game #49 - Road Game #22 (20-28), (10-11)

Last time out...

The Slammers won their series finale with the Normal CornBelters Sunday afternoon in a 5-3 decision. An electric first inning saw six total runs cross the plate. Normal put two across in the top half when Patrick Trettel reached on a fielder's choice and ex-Slammer Trey Manz laced an RBI single. Joliet powered back with four of their own, beginning with an RBI single by Hector Pellot which drove in Patrick Norris. Pellot would eventually tie the game scoring on a wild pitch by Normal starter Tyler Lavigne. With Erik Lis on base and two away, David Fox hit a two-run home run, making it 4-2. The Slammers added another run in the third when Fox singled again to score Abel Nieves. In the 5th Chico Gomez doubled to give the game its final 5-3 tally. Rookie Steven Maxwell tossed eight innings on eight hits and only three runs, while All-Star Amalio Diaz struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

For Starters...

Jim Schult's last start was on July 7 against the Normal CornBelters. He took the loss, going 4.2 innings and giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits. Since becoming a starter with Joliet, Schult is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA. Tonight is his sixth start of the season an 16th overall appearance for Joliet. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season.

Southern Illinois Connections...

Slammers Manager Bart Zeller and Slammers' VP of Baseball Operations/Bench Coach Ron Biga were both on Southern Illinois Manager Mike Pinto's staff as recently as 2010. Southern Illinois LHP Brian Fowler was on the Slammers last season. Meanwhile tonight's starters: Jim Schult and Shawn Gilblair were teammates at Eastern Connecticut State University. Schult was named the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division III co-player of the year in 2011 while Gilblair earned the award in 2007 and 2009.

All-Star Results...

The Slammers had three representatives in the 2012 Frontier League All-Star Game. The West lost the game by a score of 9-6. Starter Abel Nieves played left field and went 1-3 while Hector Pellot came off the bench to play shortstop and went 0-2. RHP Amalio Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning, walking one and striking out one.

Lis heating up...

2011 Frontier League All-Star Game MVP Erik Lis didn't make the squad this year but he's been heating up recently for the Slammers. Lis is hitting .368 over the past 10 games with a home run and eight driven in. Lis' four home runs this year are tied with All-Star Abel Nieves for the most on the team. Lis hit 20 homers to lead the squad in 2011.

Against Southern...

The Miners swept the Slammers June 27-29 at Silver Cross Field this season. However last year the Slammers went 4-2 against Southern Illinois.

Error indicator...

The Slammers are 6-22 in games when they make an error. They are 14-6 in games when they do not.

Out-hit...

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 16-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-20.

Transaction Wire...

Joliet signed RHP Mike Barsotti and activated Kyle Maunus from the 7-Day DL today. The Slammers released outfielders Zach Mandelblatt and Jimmy Waters on July 9.
