RiverHawks Lose Pitchers' Duel in Evansville, 3-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville closer Eric Massingham snuffed out an eighth-inning rally and tied the Otters' career saves record as the Rockford RiverHawks lost, 3-1, on Friday at Bosse Field.
Massingham came out of the bullpen with two on and two outs in the eighth inning and struck out Michael Hur. Massingham then retired the side in order on five pitches in the ninth inning to earn his Frontier League-leading 13th save of the year. Massingham, in his second year with the Otters, tied Mike Bille's career record of 35 saves.
Rockford stranded eight, four in scoring position. Evan Button broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run to right field in the sixth inning, but the RiverHawks were hitless after that. Adam Champion, Tyree Hayes and Massingham combined on a four-hitter.
Nick Schwaner tied the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth off starter Cody Hallahan. Andrew Armstrong relieved to start the seventh, walked DeAngelo Mack on four pitches to start the inning, then gave up a one-out single to Billy Killian. Jordan Goldschmidt came out of the bullpen and Taylor Black doubled the first pitch to the left-field corner to bring home Mack with the go-ahead run. Schwaner doubled in an run in the eighth off Goldschmidt.
Hayes (2-2), who left after two walks in the top of the eighth, won in relief. Armstrong (1-1) took the loss.
The RiverHawks are home to play River City at 7:05 p.m. Monday. Gates open at 6 p.m. for the Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet Youth Clinic. Fans 55 and older get in for free on Senior Citizen Night.
