Massingham Ties Franchise Saves Record in 3-1 Win

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - Second baseman Taylor Black ripped a go-ahead RBI double and closer Eric Massingham recorded his franchise-record tying 35th save in the Otters 3-1 win over the Rockford RiverHawks on Friday night.
The Otters now have won a season-high three games in a row.
dsa200sl276slmult1 It was a pitchers' duel to start the game, as Evansville native Adam Champion and Rockford starter Cody Hallahan held each team scoreless for the first five innings.
Rockford broke through in the top of the sixth inning when first baseman Evan Button led-off with his fifth home run of the season.It was the only run Champion allowed in 6.0 innings of work, while scattering four hits and collecting six strikeouts.
Evansville then answered back in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder Matt Sheely and third baseman Greg Fontenot each were able to work one out walks. First baseman Nick Schwaner then came to the plate two batters later and roped a game-tying RBI single to right field.
With the game even at one, Evansville scratched the go-ahead run across in the seventh inning. With two men on base, infielder Taylor Black hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring right fielder DeAngelo Mack from second.
Evansville held on to the 2-1 lead in to the eighth inning, despite Rockford working a pair of walks. Closer Eric Massingham was brought in to leave both runners on base and benefitted from an insurance run in the bottom half on a Schwaner RBI double to right field.
Massingham got Rockford in order in the ninth inning, completing his 13th save of the year, and tying him with Mike Bille, for the most saves in franchise history (35).
Evansville is now 22-27 this season as Rockford falls to 19-29.
Champion receives a no decision, while Hayes (2-2) earns the win. Hayes threw 1.2 hitless innings in the victory. Andrew Armstrong (1-1) takes the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in 0.1 innings.
Shortstop Luis Parache and catcher Billy Killian both had two hits in the win.
Evansville will look for a season-high four game winning streak tomorrow night at Historic Bosse Field. It will be a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Indiana State University Alumni Association Night. Right-hander Wynn Pelzer (0-0,0.00 ERA) is on the mound for Evansville as he will be opposed by fellow righty Kyle Schepel (1-1, 0.84 ERA).
