Joliet Slammers News Release
(Marion, IL) - Jim Schult (4-3) threw seven innings of one-run ball and tied the franchise record with 10 strike outs as the Joliet Slammers (21-28) beat the Southern Illinois Miners (29-20) by a final score of 5-1 Friday night.
Schult's 10 strike outs in one game tied the franchise record shared by Kevin Crimmel and Steven Maxwell. He retired the final 11 batters he faced, eight via the strike out.
Offensive the Slammers got going right away when Hector Pellot took Shawn Gilblair deep with one out and nobody on in the first.
Schult was helped out early by his catcher Matt Mirabal who threw out a runner trying to steal in each of the first two innings.
Joliet left two men on in the second and left the bases loaded in the third. Southern Illinois struck back in the fourth as Carlos Mendez doubled home Jake Kaase to tie the game.
Joliet finally broke through offensively in the seventh inning against reliever Dave Whigham (1-1). With one away Patrick Norris tripled to right. Hector Pellot drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Then Abel Nieves hit hard grounder that bounced off Whigham and everyone was safe as Norris scored to give Joliet a 2-1 lead.
They weren't done though as Erik Lis singled off reliever Ryan Quigley to load the bases. Then with two away it was Kyle Maunus coming up big with a two-RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-1.
Schult ended up giving up only one run on four hits in his seven innings. He walked one and struck out the franchise record-tying 10 to earn the win.
Joliet got an insurance run in the eighth. Brad Netzel doubled and eventually came around to score later in the inning on a Kaase throwing error.
Geoff Brown tossed a scoreless eighth inning and Amalio Diaz finished things off in the ninth for Joliet.
The Slammers will look to win their third in a row Saturday night as they'll send Steven Maxwell (5-4, 3.64 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Central Time and all the action can be heard on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.wjol.com .
