Grizzlies Claim Opening Night Win In Idaho

Boise, Idaho - The Utah Grizzlies battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit and defeated the Idaho Steelheads 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night in Boise. The Grizzlies start the season 1-0. The home opening weekend for Utah is next Friday and Saturday versus Alaska.

The Grizzlies entered the second period trailing 2-0 but battled back with two goals from captain Ryan Kinasewich and the game was tied going to the third period.

In the third, Utah killed six shorthanded situations to force overtime and then the shootout.

All three Utah skaters scored in the shootout with Brandon Scero, James Sixsmith and Matt Craig finding the back of the net. Nathan Lawson stopped three of four Idaho skaters in the shootout and three-straight to finish the game after the Steelheads took a 1-0 shootout lead in the first shot of the first round.

Returning goaltender Nathan Lawson stopped 23 of 25 Idaho shots in regulation.

Brandon Scero, Tim Verbeek, James Sanford and Mike Walsh registered assists for Utah in the game.

Prior to the game, Grizzlies Head Coach Kevin Colley announced that the team had claimed off of waivers from Las Vegas and signed rookie defenseman Mark Lutz.
