South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that goaltender Michal Neuvirth has been assigned to the team by the Washington Capitals. The rookie is set to make his professional debut this evening when the Stingrays host the Augusta Lynx at 7:05 pm.
Neuvirth, 20, spent the last two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing for the Plymouth Whalers, Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires, posting a 43-15-12 record. During the 2006-07 campaign, the 6-foot-1, 197-pound netminder was runner-up for the OHL Goaltender of the Year Award, recording 26 wins and four shutouts, as well as a league-leading 2.32 goals-against average and .932 save percentage. Last season the Usti Labem, Czech Republic, native saw action with three clubs, totaling 17 wins with Plymouth, Windsor and Oshawa.
Originally, Neuvirth was Washington's 2nd round selection (34th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played in one game for Washington during the preseason, allowing two goals in the Capitals' 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 25 at Verizon Center. He previously saw NHL preseason action in a 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina on Sept. 16, 2007, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
