Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Phoenix RoadRunners met for the second straight night in Arizona at the US Airways Center. The Salmon Kings started goaltender Todd Ford and Phoenix countered with Gerald Coleman.
Victoria came out and controlled the action for the first part of the period holding a 7-0 advantage in shots, but was unable to beat Coleman. The RoadRunners took advantage during a power play when Andrew Desjardins tipped a Rob Dmytruk shot past Ford for a 1-0 lead. The teams' two captains squared off in the later stages of the period when the Salmon Kings' Wes Goldie dropped the gloves versus Phoenix's Mitch Carefoot. The RoadRunners led 1-0 after the first period.
Both teams had chances in the second period, but both the Kings' Ford and the Runners' Coleman were equal to the task. Victoria out shot Phoenix 10-6 in the period, but the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Matt Fornataro made it 2-0 when he beat Ford with a backhander after collecting his own rebound. Less than a minute later Matt Kelly scored his first of the year to make it a 2-1 score when he took a Chris St. Jacques pass and moved into the high slot and wired it past Coleman. With the net empty the Salmon Kings were robbed by Coleman as time expired as he fell backwards dropping the paddle of his stick to thwart a Wes Goldie scoring attempt. RoadRunners 2 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria went 0/6=0% on the power play and Phoenix went 1/4=25%. The RoadRunners outshot the Salmon Kings 29-26.
Victoria's home schedule begins on October 24th when the team welcomes the Stockton Thunder to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a 7:05 p.m. game
