Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Phoenix RoadRunners met on the opening night of the ECHL season in Arizona at the US Airways Center.
The Salmon Kings started goaltender Jonathan Boutin and Phoenix countered with Craig Kowalski. The first period saw action up and down the ice for both teams. Boutin kept it 0-0 early with a spectacular glove save on Mitch Carefoot. Boutin was unable to stop Ashton Rome on a rebound of a Rory Rawlyk shot as the RoadRunners took a 1-0 lead. The Salmon Kings responded on a 4-on-4. With less than three minutes to play in the period Shaun Landolt won a draw back to defenseman Tim Wedderburn, whose shot was tipped by Sean O'Connor notched his first goal as a Salmon King.
The second period belonged to the RoadRunners from the onset. Carefoot was able to score on a wrap-around goal a mere 29 seconds into the frame for a 2-1 lead. Phoenix poured it on just after the midway mark of the period when they were able to pot three straight goals. Matt Fornataro was able to squeak a shot past a screened Boutin for a 3-1 lead. Moments later Fornataro stole a clearing pass and wired a shot over Boutin's left shoulder. Over a minute later, during 4-on-4 action, a pretty passing play left Colin Sinclair staring at a gaping net and he was able to direct it in. All told the RoadRunners scored three goals in three minutes and eight seconds and four goals in the period to go enter the final 20 minutes with a 5-1 lead.
Phoenix added two more goals before Boutin was relieved by Todd Ford between the pipes. Colin Sinclair and Daniel Sisca each potted a goal as the Salmon Kings dropped their season opener. RoadRunners 7 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria went 0/5=0% on the power play and Phoenix went 1/5=20%. The Salmon Kings outshot the RoadRunners 41-31.
